He joined the\u00a0\u00a0Monitor\u00a0\u00a0staff in 1981 covered many beats and wrote a science column before becoming editorial page editor in 1987. He left for the\u00a0\u00a0Boston Globe\u00a0\u00a0in 1990 and returned to the\u00a0\u00a0Monitor\u00a0\u00a0in 2001.
